Fallon's Flowers history:

Piggly Wiggly on the corner of Peace and St. Mary's Streets is seen c. 1950. This store opened to the public 3 March 1949 and by then the grocery store chain had been in Raleigh for over 25 years. At the time of this photo, the original store on Fayetteville Street was still in operation. In July of 1973, Fallon's Flowers began renovations on the building, which included lopping off the corner parapet (no!) and installing (double no!) the recently removed wooden shingle awning. After renovations, their second location officially opened in December 1973. Fallon's has recently removed the wooden shingle awning (yes!) and is now working to restore the exterior of the building. Sadly, the corner parapet is likely gone for good. Both Fallon's and Piggly Wiggly opened their first Raleigh stores on Fayetteville Street in 1921--October 15th and March 21st, respectively.  N.53.15.4050.
